Senior Accountant                                                                                             FIN/7

Finance        

Salary Range: $62,230.38 - $94,690.89                                                

                                                            

JOB SUMMARY

This position performs higher level accounting functions in support of the town’s financial operations. An incumbent in this position may be designated “Senior Accountant.”

MAJOR DUTIES

  • Reviews monthly bank account reconciliations: monitors and resolves bank issues.

  • Receives, reviews, and maintains spreadsheets for cash collection batch reports for use in the bank reconciliation process.

  • Responsible for accounts receivable to include examining, interpreting, and verifying a wide variety of financial documents to bill for external customers and outside agencies.

  • Prepares and reviews journal entries resulting from account analysis. 

  • Compiles and analyzes financial data and prepares related reports; prepares analysis of accounts as requested.

  • Manages the Fixed asset and Capital projects in the general ledger of the accounting system.  

  • Monitors, reconciles and verifies complex financial data and transactions to include accounting analysis for grants (both State and Federal) and Governmental and Enterprise funds.

  • Assists with the preparation for and coordination of the audit process; assists with year-end closings.

  • Tracks and manages assets in the software system.

  • Reviews deposits for accuracy in the absence of the Customer Service Director.

  • Works closely with Finance Leadership to monitor internal controls daily to help increase the efficiency and effectiveness of transactions and processes.

  • Assists with budget preparations and forecasts as needed.

  • Performs related duties.

 

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION

  • Knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP).

  • Knowledge of Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) guidelines.

  • Knowledge of auditing principles.

  • Knowledge of relevant federal and state laws, town ordinances, and department policies and procedures.

  • Knowledge of IRS guidelines.

  • Knowledge of computers and job-related software programs.

  • Skill in problem solving.

  • Skill in prioritizing and planning.

  • Skill in interpersonal relations.

  • Skill in oral and written communication.

 

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The Finance Director assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

 

GUIDELINES

Guidelines include GAAP, GASB guidelines, internal control procedures, relevant state and federal laws, and town and department policies and procedures. These guidelines require judgment, selection, and interpretation in application. 

 

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of varied accounting duties. Strict regulations and the need for accuracy contribute to the complexity of the position.

  • The purpose of this position is to provide financial accounting support for the town’s financial operations. Successful performance ensures the efficiency and effectiveness of those operations.

  • Contacts are typically with coworkers, representatives of other government agencies, auditors, vendors, and the general public.

  • Contacts are typically to exchange information, resolve problems, defend and justify matters, and provide services. 

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table.

  • The work is typically performed in an office.

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with the completion of a baccalaureate degree in a course of study related to the occupational field.

  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with experience in a similar position for five to seven years.

 

Or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Strong experience in excel to analyze large amounts of data details and transform information into a presentation form.  

Tyler Munis software experience a plus

Candidate for, or licensed, CPA also a plus
