Senior Accountant
Finance Department

Job Description:
The Senior Accountant performs a variety of accounting and financial duties related to the city’s
financial statements, budgets, audits, cash flow management, reconciliations, and journal entries.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

• Assists in the preparation of the monthly and annual financial reports, statements, and
schedules by established deadlines, as well as Generally Accepted
Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB)
requirements.
• Assists in the preparation of budget documents, revenues, and cost projections.
• Prepares bank reconciliations and reconciles assigned accounts and system modules.
• Performs fixed asset accounting and reconciles construction in progress assets; maintains
equipment replacement schedules; and maintains property inventory and control.
• Prepares, reviews, and verifies financial documents for accuracy and completeness; assures
transactions are charged to correct accounts per the city’s annual budget and
specified grant requirements.
• Performs accounting analysis of costs, financial statements, budget worksheets, and other
data; accumulates statistics, performs fiscal and program analyses, and makes appropriate
recommendations to the Assistant Finance Director.
• Maintains general ledgers and sub-ledgers; maintains chart of accounts; prepares journal
entries and accruals.
• Performs grant management and related financial reporting.
• Responsible for the collection of city purchasing agreements and contracts. Updates and enters
all executed contracts are on a tracking log for proper accounting treatment.
• Provides research, auditing, ad-hoc reporting, and financial and accounting processing
support for the Assistant Finance Director.
• Assists in the financial aspects of the city’s utility billing department and accounts receivable
functions.
• Performs related work, special projects, or other duties as so assigned.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE & CERTIFICATIONS:

• Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or a related field.
• Two years of experience in finance, accounting, or bookkeeping. Preferably in governmental
accounting.
• CPA or CGFO certification preferred.
