CONTROLLER

The Position

Gaston College promotes lifelong learning and economic development through 140 programs of study and is looking for a collaborative and energetic leader to serve as its next Controller. Reporting to the Vice President for Finance and Operations, the next Controller will be a dynamic, strategic, and emotionally intelligent leader capable of motivating and leading a diverse team of ten staff members across multiple departments and divisions within the college and playing a critical role in overseeing accounting operations, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, financial planning and payroll.

The Controller will possess a keen understanding of reviewing, analyzing, and managing financial statements and related financial data. Additionally, they will be experienced with monitoring small, medium, and large budgets while managing and ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local grant funds, regulations, laws, administrative codes, and North Carolina Community College System policies, safeguarding the college’s financial integrity.  

The Controller is responsible for financial planning, budget management, and the preparation of month-end and year-end reports. The Controller also leads financial audits, acting as the primary contact for audit processes, and ensures timely production of essential external reports like the State Treasurer’s ACFR (Annual Comprehensive Financial Report) worksheets and Management Discussion and Analysis narratives.

As a strategic leader, the Controller monitors cash flow, and oversees capital expenditures for state and county bond-funded projects. The role also involves securing and managing grants, ensuring smooth financial operations with funding agencies. 

The Controller ensures the accurate and timely submission of financial reports and stays current with financial reporting standards like Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB), Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB), and American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA). Collaboration is key, as the Controller works closely with departments like Student Affairs and Financial Aid to manage Title IV funds and other accounting functions. The role also involves partnering with Technology Services to maintain accounting functions within Ellucian Colleague (ERP System) and resolve software-related issues. 

The Controller oversees the Enhancing Accountability in Government through Leadership and Education (EAGLE) internal audit program and maintains effective internal controls. The Controller is also responsible for preparing financial reports for Board of Trustee meetings, participating in campus-wide committees, attending key training sessions, and fostering the professional development of direct reports.

 

Qualifications

Minimum requirements include a bachelor’s degree from a nationally accredited institution in finance, accounting, or a related field, combined with at least five years of professional accounting experience. Candidates must also have at least five years of supervisory experience in a finance-related field. Additionally, a strong understanding of finance, accounting, and budgeting is required, along with a working knowledge of GAAP. Proficiency in advanced MS Excel and experience with automated financial and accounting reporting systems are essential. The ability to analyze financial data and prepare comprehensive financial reports, statements, and projections is also required, along with strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Preferred qualifications include a master’s degree from a nationally accredited institution in finance, accounting, or a related field. CPA certification is also preferred. Additionally, candidates with experience within the North Carolina Community College System and familiarity with Ellucian Colleague are highly desirable.

 

Compensation and Benefits

The expected hiring range is $80,000-$110,000, depending on qualifications and experience, with an excellent benefits package. Learn more about our options and employee-based benefits here.
